Raquel: Born in Durban, South Africa, many ask how I ended up on a little Island in the English Channel. Well, growing up I moved around, a lot. Even before the age of 7, I remember living in four/five different homes around Durban and Joburg. In total I had three primary schools in South Africa, two secondary schools in London and college in Guernsey.
My father worked hard to get us the best life filled with opportunities, and as great as this adventure was in theory each time, what it really meant was that I was forever the new kid that didn’t quite fit in – walking to the sound of my own drum and with my head in the clouds.
I’ve been described as independent, outgoing, loner and just weird but moving around you have two choices; Compromise who you are or be undeniably you, where you will probably be sat in the toilet cubicle eating lunch alone (yes, some days were hard). Computer games, music, books and sports were unfaltering company.
As I love learning new things and meeting new people, exploring the world has always been the dream. A few years ago my dream was disregarded and my life was on a course, without me steering. This caused me to leap (hurtle) from stability towards the unknown and turn my world upside down. Now when things are turned upside down thats when the shit that has festered for decades is unearthed and you are forced to face and deal with it alone.
This was a treacherous journey of self, which caused me to really look in the mirror, see all the flaws and insecurities and question why, why was I the way I was. It fascinated me and I started reading and learning from people I found inspirational, that were no longer in the passenger seat. I wanted to take charge, not of life but of me and improve.
On the way I met Jack…
“We show the truths of persuing a meaningful life, the risks and the difficulties, and hopefully how worth it they are”
Hi, Im Jack and my journey really began in early 2017, I went from a fun loving scuba diving instructor living in paradise to having the floor pulled out from under my feet. that changed everything.
It was a bad crash, I rode my bike into a ditch and the thing basically disintegrated along my my right femur. I had multiple skull fractures a broken nose, broken eye socket and a broken Femur.
But for me the worst part was that suddenly life seemed so precious and I disappeared into a hole of contemplation and reliving so many moments in my life that I wasn’t proud of.
I faced the fact that most of my life I had been wearing a mask and was so desperate to be liked that I had missed opportunities to form some real long lasting friendships with some really amazing people.
It was also the best thing because I had absolutely nothing after that accident, I was flown back to my home island of Guernsey on the other side of the world and couldn’t even bring my clothes with me.
I was bared naked to the world and to myself for the first time ever and decided right then that I could build myself again, and this time I could choose the pieces and form them as I desired.
I felt like I wasn’t the smartest guy in the room ever so I started educating myself. I felt like I had an entrepreneurs mind but I never executed on any of my ideas and was always to comfortable to take any risk, so I started taking risks and putting my ideas into action.
I started setting goals, and I started crushing them.

The Story of the Digital Open Road
What started as a first attempt at affiliate marketing became so much more.
Our focus quickly changed from a desire to make money, to a passion to provide value. We found that in this space, everyone was speaking from experience rather than in the moment, many of which, wished they had documented their journey. Well, we are here to do just that.
This is a new experience for us, experimenting with advice and tips from successful entrepreneurs, ranging from eating habits to search engine optimisation. Finding what works for us as we navigate the open road of building a business online and self-development.
The goal is to motivate by showing, inspire by doing. Which we hope will encourage a diverse and open-minded community where we all learn, gain and grow together.
Our North Stars
01. Authentic : Always honest and true to ourselves
02. Inspire : Growth in ourselves and others
03. Dedicated : To challenging the status-quo
04. Being Present : Connecting on a personal level
05. Determined : To do the best we can in all we do with passion
The Digital Open Road started as an affiliate marketing project and quickly became so much more than that, we want to use this platform that we have created to document and share our journey to achieve our goals and how we are taking action to achieve them.
